Nostr Character Limit (2026): No Text Limit

Nostr publishes no character limit that we enforce, because it is not a text-first platform. The limits that decide what travels there are the media ones, and they are on this page too.

Every figure on this page is read at build time from the same file the splitter and the rules engine read, so it cannot drift from what the product actually enforces. Limits last verified 27 August 2026.

Over the limit

What happens when you exceed it

There is no number here to exceed. Nostr publishes no text limit that we can enforce, so we enforce none — a guessed limit would cut writing that would have published whole, which is a worse failure than the one it prevents.

If Nostr refuses a post for a reason of its own, that reason is what our delivery ledger prints, in Nostr’s words rather than ours. You get the platform’s actual answer, not a generic failure.

The rest of the specification

The other Nostr limits worth knowing

Threading
Nostr supports a real reply chain, so a long post becomes one thread rather than several unconnected posts. Threading is on by default and you can turn it off per flow.
Video
Nostr publishes no duration cap we can enforce, so nothing is stopped here for length. An oversized upload comes back with the platform's own refusal, which the ledger prints.
Images and alt text
We have not verified an image count for Nostr, so we enforce none — a guessed limit silently drops pictures. Alt text travels with every image that goes.
How Echowide sees new posts
Nostr is a destination only. Reading it would need a different kind of access than publishing does, so we do not claim to watch it.

In context

Nostr against the other 12 platforms

Nostr is one of the platforms with no text limit we enforce. The table below is the whole set, so you can see which destination is the one that decides whether a post needs splitting.

A dash means we have not verified a figure for that platform, so no adapter enforces one and the platform’s own refusal is what the ledger prints. Verified 27 August 2026.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the Nostr character limit?
Nostr publishes no character limit that we enforce. It is not a text-first platform, so the constraint that matters there is the media one, not the caption. Verified 27 August 2026.
What happens if a Nostr post goes over the limit?
There is no limit here for a post to exceed. If Nostr refuses a post for its own reason, that reason is what our ledger prints — we do not invent a number and cut your writing to fit it.
Does Nostr support threads?
Yes. Nostr has real reply chains, so a long post becomes one thread with each part replying to the last, rather than a run of disconnected posts.
How many images can one Nostr post carry?
We have not verified a count for Nostr, so we enforce none. A guessed limit silently drops pictures, which is worse than letting the platform answer with its own refusal — which the ledger then prints.
How long can a Nostr video be?
Nostr publishes no duration cap we can enforce, so we do not invent one. An oversized upload comes back with the platform's own reason.
How does the Nostr limit compare with other platforms?
The table on this page compares all 13 platforms we support. The tightest of the others is X at 280 characters, which is usually the one that decides whether a post needs splitting at all.

The splitter already knows this number.

Write once, at whatever length suits what you are saying. Echowide fits it to each destination separately, threads it where the platform has real threads, and tells you plainly when something did not fit.
